With staffing shortages becoming a critical issue for funeral homes, attracting and retaining Gen Z is more important than ever. Born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, this dynamic group values flexibility, innovation, environmentalism, and work-life balance just as much as pay and job security. A recent Newsweek article, “ Gen Z Woman Shares Why She Became a Mortician in Her Early 20s ,” featuring 22-year-old TikTok sensation Miranda Mythen (@mimithemortician) reveals her motivation for joining the funeral services field: “I learned about natural burials and conservation cemeteries in high school and realized there were ways to give back to the environment even in death. This piqued my interest, as I’ve always been into sustainable living.” Here are some ways you can attract Gen Z talent: 1. Promote Flexibility 75% of Gen Z workers prioritize workplace flexibility above all other benefits. 2. Offer Growth Opportunities This generation craves continual learning and career advancement. Highlight your training programs and pathways for promotion. 3. Showcase Digital Prowess Gen Z is tech-savvy and expects a robust digital work environment. Make sure your tech offerings are up-to-date and appealing. Want more insights on attracting young talent? Tribute Technology is a proud sponsor of the MKJ Summit on October 14-15 in Palm Beach, FL, where experts will discuss strategies to recruit Gen Z staff (and hold on to them) ... along with many other topics to address your firm’s most pressing issues. A scam involving cremation jewelry that has been making the rounds for several years has resurfaced. A few of our clients have been dealing with this issue recently, so we wanted to be sure you have the information to protect your firm. Here’s what happens: Someone calls the funeral home and orders thousands of dollars of cremation jewelry using a fraudulent card. The cremation jewelry is then sent to the scammer. The actual cardholder reports the transaction as “fraudulent” to their credit card company, as they did not place the order. The funeral home or crematory then gets hit with a chargeback, which hurts the firm – in addition to hurting the cardholder. A few years ago, NFDA published a news release on this topic , and we’re sharing some of their tips here: Be suspicious if the caller orders several pieces of the same merchandise. Warning sign: The person wants the merchandise shipped to an international address, with multiple pieces of merchandise all going to the same address. Be careful about accepting credit card payments, especially if it is from a consumer, via email, fax, or telephone (especially to an overseas address). Make sure to share reminders about the potential for scams like these with all employees at your firm, including your answering service (if applicable). We hope this is a helpful resource for your firm. We are always here to help our clients however we can, including sharing details about scams like these.
